Discovery ChannelFor millions of people living around the Indian Ocean and throughout Asia, December 26th, 2004 is a date that will forever be etched into their memory. One of the worst tsunamis ever swept across the open ocean. In the aftermath of the world's most destructive natural disaster in recorded history, stories emerge of hope amongst despair, of triumph against the odds, of unlikely heroism and unbelievable luck. This documentary by Natural History New Zealand (NHNZ), commissioned by The Discovery Channel, reveals the people and the emotions behind the terrifying images of the Indian Ocean Tsunami.
Oceans Below co-founder Aidy Kaye, was commissioned to film on a liveaboard dive trip in Thailand's Similan Islands on that fateful day. He was actually underwater, but well out to sea, when the tsunami rolled through. This quirk of fate spared him from the horrific fate of others which were diving, swimming and going about their daily lives on or near the shoreline. Some of his footage was used in the NHNZ production- Tsunami: The Race for Survival. Aidy was also hired by NHNZ as a cameraman to re-enact some of the things that happened during the dive and his personal story features in the documentary. Aidy's collaboration with this talented team which has won over 200 prestigious awards, has given Oceans Below further insight into the world of documentary film-making.
Worldwide Tribe ProductionsIn August of 2009 Oceans Below was commissioned by Worldwide Tribe Productions to film and coordinate diving logistics for the Discovery Channel's hit TV show Miami Ink. For 3 days our staff hosted their professional film crew as well as provided a vast array of stock footage of the island- both above and below the surface.
