Editing underwater video in Koh Tao

Image: Students and me enjoying an underwater video editing session

Here at Oceans Below Koh Tao, part of our underwater video training course is to actually take students away from the water for two days and have them focus on a dry project.

This is to teach them more about writing, filming, and editing a whole project themselves, start to finish production. It can be a lot of fun as they are encouraged to get friends or other students involved as actors and assistants.

They can make anything they like. Music videos, promotional films, advertisements, art films, simple stories, educational videos, conservation films, etc....... All students agree that they learn a lot from this little project, and it helps them understand the story telling concept behind filming the daily underwater videos.

Underwater video of the padi open water course

For some reason unknown to me i have been adopted by the Simple Life Diving family, filming for them three times in the last week.

Not that i'm to complain as they have the most beautiful boat on Koh Tao. Heading out with a group of four PADI Open Water divers and instructor Alex we cruised around Hin pee Wee.

The 18m max depth was broken by all students who, full of confidence, dropped to 25m before i even knew they were gone. Yesterday on an Afternoon Dive i had the delight of filming four crazy German girls who wanted an underwater video to take home.

They were the best underwater dancers i have ever filmed on Koh Tao. It made the late night edit almost worthwhile. And finally my first ever group of divers, Steven leading the way we set off to White Rock. The visibility was incredible, there was so much to see including a few to many Trigger Fish for my liking, but i got some great shots and sold the film. :) YEY!

Indian ocean wlakman

Continued from previous article. When filming the Underwater video for the students a few days ago I was also lucky enough to get of a few great shots of a Indian Ocean Walkman (spiny devilfish).

I carried on filming the rest of the video after the encounter but my underwater video trainees didn't want to leave. So I continued with the job and left them in the sand to watch the fish, which I guess was more interesting than following me!

Underwater video of air ring

Image: Photo taken from air ring video

Nassos filmed his first open water video yesterday, which means he's getting close to finishing his underwater video training. He was filming one student and the instructor. The student has agreed to buy a copy that will be posted out to him as soon as Nassos has the edit finished.

So no pressure mate. But we do want it finished today. I also took Fulvio out on the same boat for some video training dives. At mango bay on the north of the island there is a large school of smooth tailed trevally (easily mistaken for fusiliers).

I got a bit carried away and started blowing air rings up into the school. I got a few good shots as the trevally would move out of the way of the bubble ring and close in again to fill the gap.

Fulvio starts his underwater video course

Fulvio arrived on Koh Tao after booking his underwater video training course with us a few weeks ago.

I took him out for his first training dives with an underwater camera a couple of days ago. We were lucky enough to go out to chumphon pinnacle for his first dive.

We went in the afternoon so there was no other boats around. Just us and a few more people from our boat. The viz was great and I got some good shot of him filming the barracuda as the swam in formation around us. He did really well for his first time out with an underwater video camera.
